How We Calculate Age
Our calculators use precise date mathematics following international standards:
- Western/International Age: Age increases on each birthday anniversary. We calculate the exact difference between dates accounting for varying month lengths (28-31 days) and leap years (every 4 years, except century years not divisible by 400).
- Korean Age (Traditional): Following the traditional Korean age system, everyone is 1 at birth and gains a year on New Year's Day. Note: South Korea officially adopted international age in June 2023.
- Chronological Age: Per APA testing standards, we provide Years:Months format (e.g., 7:4) with decimal age for psychological and educational assessments.
- Life Expectancy: Estimates based on WHO Global Health Observatory country-specific data, adjusted for gender.
Accuracy & Limitations
What's accurate:
- Age calculations are accurate to the second using JavaScript's Date object
- Leap years are handled correctly (Gregorian calendar rules)
- Month lengths are calculated precisely (not approximated as 30 days)
- Time zone is based on your browser's local settings
Limitations to note:
- Life expectancy estimates are statistical averages, not individual predictions. They should not replace medical advice.
- Historical dates before 1582 (pre-Gregorian calendar) may have discrepancies
- Korean age calculator reflects traditional system; official South Korean documents now use international age
